Chocolate Quinoa Porridge

Here are the health benefits of this delcious dish:

Quinoa:

  • protein for growth, blood clotting and vision
  • calcium is needed for muscle contraction and relaxation, nerve functioning and blood pressure
  • magnesium to maintain bone mineralisation and heart function
  • zinc is required for hormone insulin, immune reactions and wound healing
  • copper enables iron to be turned into haemoglobin

Banana:

  • vitamin C is an antioxidant, immune booster and assists in the absorption of iron
  • dietary fibre to reduce risk of heart disease and diabetes; and, of course, help us to poo

Cacao:

  • potassium maintains electrolytes and muscle contractions
  • zinc transports vitamin A through the body as well as making healthy sperm and healthy development of a foetus
  • niacin (B3) is needed for energy transfer when glucose, fat and alcohol are metabolised

Cinnamon

  • can stabilise blood sugar

Honey:

  • used as an antibacterial agent which can encourage wound healing; it also alleviates coughs and has antifungal properties

What you need:

1 cup quinoa

1 banana

2 TBS cacao

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp vanilla essence

1 TBS honey (or maple syrup)

What to do:

Cook quinoa according to packet instructions. Once cooked add in cacao, cinnamon, vanilla and honey. Mash in the banana. Serve.

This recipe also tastes delicious with berries instead of banana. Heat fresh or frozen berries in a saucepan on medium setting with a little water until warmed through. Add to porridge.
